project overviewIn this project, you will create a packaging design. You will make up your own company and come up with a branding message. Every image you choose and color you use will affect the branding message – so choose wisely. The project will eventually be printed on paper, where you will be able to fold the design into an actual packaging mock-up.
We will spend a day talking about how packaging can be used to reach an audience of consumers. We will also learn a few new things in both Photoshop and Illustrator to make our ideas happen. Once we've seen a number of the tools and technique available, we'll plan a box project in groups using what we've learned. You will gather ideas and create sketches to communicate your idea. You may use Pinterest to gather ideas while sketching. On Pinterest, try searching for "packaging" "packaging redesign" or "cool packaging" to find ideas. You can also look at the gallery link below to see what other students have done. Sketches for this project must comply with the standards we discuss in class and are described on the syllabus. |

Assignment 1 Introduction + Audience Analysis
Objectives:
In this project, you will use Photoshop AND Illustrator together to create an exquisite packaging design. Later, we will print it and turn it into a real work. Your project should exhibit strong skills in both software packages. It should also strongly indicate knowledge of a particular audience. We will now go through the following slide show to talk about audience and visual cues. Use the Document below to take notes. Upon opening the notes page, collaborate through Office365 so all members of your group equally contribute to the research.
Assignment 2 Audience Compare + Contrast Research
Objectives:
Open a New Office365 Word Document – this is where your research will go.
Assignment 3 Box Sketch
Objectives:
Now it's time for you to design your packaging. Like most projects, we will start with sketches. Choose one of your templates that would fit your product the best. Print it out and sketch your design on it. Shoot a photo of your sketch and upload it to behance.
You might want to change the colors of the package template to black and white - the orange is hard to sketch on. Select everything in Illustrator (CTRL + A on Windows, CMD + A on Mac) and then simply press "D" on the keyboard. This stands for default colors and will make the paths in your template have a white fill and 1 pt. black stroke.
Assignment 4 Big Box Project
Assignment 5 Audience Statement
Objectives:
- Describe how people use artwork to sell things to specific types of people.
- Use my visual literacy skills to analyze the audience of a commercial design.

Assignment 2 Audience Compare + Contrast Research
Objectives:
- Describe how people use artwork to sell things to specific types of people.
- Use my visual literacy skills to analyze the audience of a commercial design.
Open a New Office365 Word Document – this is where your research will go.
- Find pictures online of packaging that you like. Do not focus on PRODUCTS you like, but find PACKAGING that you like.
- Once you have settled on a product, find a similar product from a different company (example: if you chose hand soap from Ivory, choose hand soap from Method or Dial). The idea is to have two packages to compare and contrast.
- Paste pictures of BOTH products in your document. Resize the pictures if needed.
- Then, answer the same questions from the previous worksheet. Feel free to copy and past from here:
- Name of a person who might buy this product.
- Use a real name:
- What does this person like to do for fun:
- What does this person do for a living:
- Where does this person live:
- Justify your answers by pointing out specific visual clues. What about this package’s design/color/graphics/etc. makes you think these things?
- Answer these questions for each of the two packages you choose.
- Name of a person who might buy this product.
Assignment 3 Box Sketch
Objectives:
- Use my visual literacy skills to analyze the audience of a commercial design.
- Plan and communicate to an audience through sketching ideas
- Be a productive member of a design team
